The Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce will welcome Governor Chet Culver for a Whistle-Stop Rally on Sunday, July 26 to discuss the importance of the Chicago Flyer - Iowa City to Chicago passenger rail initiative. Governor Culver will travel by train and arrive at noon at the historic train depot at 119 Wright Street in Iowa City.

Three community members will present proclamations of support to Governor Culver and Dick Welch, Iowa's representative to the National Association of Railroad Passengers will read a letter of support on behalf of long-time passenger rail advocate Eliot Keller.

The Chamber invites the public to participate in the rally to demonstrate support for Amtrak service linking Iowa City, the Quad Cities, and Chicago. Complimentary hot dogs and lemonade will be served and attendees will receive a Chicago Flyer whistle to sound their enthusiasm.

“The Chicago Flyer will fuel job growth, reduce congestion, boast environmental advantages and improve quality of life in the Iowa City Area, said Nancy Quellhorst, Chamber president & CEO. “The Chamber appreciates support from Iowa legislators, who understand the value of this long-term investment for the state.”

Traveling with the Governor on Sunday will be state transportation officials, advocates for passenger rail and community leaders. The event is part of the Governor’s Iowa Unlimited Tour which concludes at the Midwest High Speed Rail Summit in Chicago.

The Chamber launched its Chicago Flyer initiative in March 2009 to actively lobby for the 79 mph Amtrak passenger train service connecting Iowa City to Chicago through the Quad Cities. Since its debut, more than 2,000 individuals, businesses and government agencies have joined the Chicago Flyer coalition. The initiative also boasts more than 5,100 Facebook friends.
